There’s also control for jumping and enter for sending chat messages. On the most basic level, Toontown is played using the arrow keys for movement and the mouse to choose your attacks/ gags. Mechanics of Toontownįinally, we get to the mechanics. There are also a number of other things like fishing and golfing which allow for a more chill gaming experience. This gives a player plenty of time to be slightly distracted, come back to the game, and make a choice. So on and so forth until all cogs or all toons are defeated. Then the toons get another 20 seconds to choose their gags and attack. Toons start by getting 20 seconds to choose their gags then they attack. Toontown uses a turn based attack system with a 20 second timer. For those who want a little more chat freedom, there’s a setting that allows you to type chat to others but there’s still a pretty extensive black out list of things you can’t say.Ībnegation -Even though this is an MMO there are a number of aspects that allow you simply sit back and enjoy the game. While there is a chat available, the basic child-safe chat is simply a list of simple messages and phrases. Later in the game, you’re also able to beat cog HQs and cog VPs which are nearly impossible to beat alone. You’re able to defeat cog buildings easier and earlier and keep playing for longer before needing to refresh your health, laugh meter, or your attacks, gags. Aesthetics of Toontownįellowship - Fellowship allows you to minimize the amount of grinding required to accomplish your next objective or Toon Task as the game calls it. However, they all still rely on the same world with the same basic mechanics.įor this analysis, I’ll be focusing on TTO and, by extension, TTR since it remains as true as possible to the original even though almost all of the mods will share these elements. Including Toontown Infinity (TTI) which attempts to mold Toontown into a more sophisticated version, Toontown Offline which is a single player offline version of the game, and Toontown Corporate Clash (TTCC) which created a more advanced version with a more in-depth storyline with new areas. In the seven years since Toontown Online (TTO) shut its doors, many many mods of the game have appeared. ToonTown Rewritten (TTR) is a fan built recreation of Toontown that tries to stay as close as possible to original and only makes changes that they believe the original creators might have made. Little over a month later, Toontown Rewritten released in alpha. The community was crushed.īut that was not the end of Toontown. Despite fan uproar, Disney kept with their plans and officially shut down Toontown in September of 2013. They were shutting down the servers in just one more month. In August 2013, Disney officially announced the end of Toontown Online. Toontown itself has a very interesting story. I first began playing in about 2003 just near the start of the game. Toontown Online was a desktop MMO RPG designed by Disney for children. Well, maybe not my mantra, but I certainly enjoyed the commercials.
